Firsthand vs. Secondhand
Aligned to RI.4.6 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
What this lesson teaches
A firsthand account comes from someone who was actually there, so it often uses 'I' and shares feelings. A secondhand account comes from someone who studied or reported the event but did not live it, so it gives facts from the outside. Each focuses on different information.
Worked example
A sailor's diary saying 'I gripped the wheel as the storm tossed our ship' is firsthand. A textbook page explaining 'The 1900 storm sank many ships that day' is secondhand — same storm, different focus.

De Primera y de Segunda Mano
Un relato de primera mano viene de alguien que realmente estuvo ahí, así que suele usar 'yo' y compartir sentimientos. Un relato de segunda mano viene de alguien que estudió o reportó el evento pero no lo vivió, así que da hechos desde afuera. Cada uno se enfoca en información distinta.
Ejemplo: El diario de un marinero que dice 'Agarré el timón mientras la tormenta sacudía nuestro barco' es de primera mano. Una página de libro que explica 'La tormenta de 1900 hundió muchos barcos ese día' es de segunda mano — la misma tormenta, distinto enfoque.
