Reading Charts and Pictures

What this lesson teaches
Nonfiction often shares information in more than just words. Charts, diagrams, maps, and photos can add facts or make an idea clearer. Read these carefully and connect what they show to what the words say.
Worked examples
Example 1
An article about weather might include a bar graph showing rain for each month. The words say the rainiest month, and the graph lets you see exactly how much more rain fell than in the driest month.
Example 2
A timeline lets you see at a glance that two events people talk about together were actually forty years apart.
Example 3
Check the axis before you read a graph. A bar chart that starts at 90 instead of 0 makes a tiny difference look enormous.
Practice questions
- Describe one thing a diagram can show that a paragraph cannot easily explain.
- Find a chart or map in a book and tell what information it adds.
- Explain how a photo with a caption helped you understand something you read.

Leer Gráficas e Imágenes
La no ficción muchas veces comparte información con más que solo palabras. Las gráficas, diagramas, mapas y fotos pueden agregar hechos o aclarar una idea. Léelos con cuidado y conecta lo que muestran con lo que dicen las palabras.
Ejemplo 1: Un artículo sobre el clima podría incluir una gráfica de barras que muestra la lluvia de cada mes. Las palabras dicen cuál es el mes más lluvioso, y la gráfica te deja ver exactamente cuánta más lluvia cayó que en el mes más seco.
Ejemplo 2: Una línea del tiempo te deja ver de un vistazo que dos sucesos de los que se habla juntos estaban en realidad a cuarenta años de distancia.
Ejemplo 3: Revisa el eje antes de leer una gráfica. Una gráfica de barras que empieza en 90 en vez de 0 hace que una diferencia mínima se vea enorme.
