What Is Area?

What this lesson teaches
Area is the amount of flat space a shape covers. We measure area by counting equal unit squares that fill the shape with no gaps or overlaps.
Worked example
A rectangle is covered by unit squares in 2 rows of 3. Count all the squares: there are 6. So the area is 6 square units.
Practice questions
- A shape is made of 8 unit squares. What is its area?
- Draw a rectangle that covers exactly 4 unit squares.
- Why must the squares have no gaps when measuring area?

¿Qué es el Área?
El área es la cantidad de espacio plano que cubre una figura. Medimos el área contando cuadrados unitarios iguales que llenan la figura sin espacios ni encimarse.
Ejemplo: Un rectángulo está cubierto por cuadrados unitarios en 2 filas de 3. Cuenta todos los cuadrados: hay 6. Entonces el área es 6 unidades cuadradas.
