What this lesson teaches
Area is the amount of flat space a shape covers, measured in square units. For a rectangle, multiply length × width.
Worked examples
Example 1
A rug 5 ft long and 3 ft wide covers 5 × 3 = 15 square feet.
Example 2
A garden bed 8 ft long and 2 ft wide covers 8 × 2 = 16 square feet.
Example 3
Area and perimeter answer different questions. A 4-by-4 room has an area of 16 square feet (the carpet) but a perimeter of 16 feet (the baseboard) — same number here, but they measure different things.
Practice questions
- Find the area of a 6×4 rectangle.
- A square is 7 cm on each side — what's its area?
- Two rectangles both have area 12. Give their dimensions.

Área
El área es la cantidad de espacio plano que cubre una figura, medida en unidades cuadradas. Para un rectángulo, multiplica largo × ancho.
Ejemplo 1: Un tapete de 5 ft de largo y 3 ft de ancho cubre 5 × 3 = 15 pies cuadrados.
Ejemplo 2: Un huerto de 8 ft de largo y 2 ft de ancho cubre 8 × 2 = 16 pies cuadrados.
Ejemplo 3: El área y el perímetro responden preguntas distintas. Un cuarto de 4 por 4 tiene un área de 16 pies cuadrados (la alfombra) pero un perímetro de 16 pies (el zoclo) — aquí sale el mismo número, pero miden cosas diferentes.
