Measure Mass and Volume

What this lesson teaches
We measure how heavy something is in grams and kilograms. We measure how much liquid fits in a container in liters. Add or subtract these amounts like any numbers.
Worked examples
Example 1
A bottle holds 2 liters and another holds 3 liters. Together they hold 2 + 3 = 5 liters of water.
Example 2
An apple has a mass of about 200 grams. Five apples together are 5 × 200 = 1,000 grams, which is 1 kilogram.
Example 3
Grams measure how heavy something is; liters measure how much space a liquid fills. A kilogram of feathers and a kilogram of rocks weigh the same, but they do not take up the same space.

- A bag of rice is 4 kilograms. Two bags weigh how many kilograms?
- A jug has 6 liters and you pour out 2 liters. How many liters are left?
- One apple is about 100 grams. About how much do 3 apples weigh?

Medir Masa y Volumen
Medimos qué tan pesado es algo en gramos y kilogramos. Medimos cuánto líquido cabe en un recipiente en litros. Suma o resta estas cantidades como cualquier número.
Ejemplo 1: Una botella tiene 2 litros y otra tiene 3 litros. Juntas tienen 2 + 3 = 5 litros de agua.
Ejemplo 2: Una manzana tiene una masa de unos 200 gramos. Cinco manzanas juntas son 5 × 200 = 1,000 gramos, o sea 1 kilogramo.
Ejemplo 3: Los gramos miden qué tan pesado es algo; los litros miden cuánto espacio ocupa un líquido. Un kilogramo de plumas y uno de piedras pesan lo mismo, pero no ocupan el mismo espacio.
