What this lesson teaches

Some words mean exactly what they say. Others paint a picture and are not meant word for word.

Example 1

'It's raining cats and dogs' does not mean animals fall from the sky — it means it is raining very hard.

Example 2

'She was on cloud nine' does not mean she was flying — it means she was extremely happy.

Example 3

'The wind whispered through the trees' gives the wind a human action. Wind cannot whisper, and that is exactly the point.
