Opinion Writing with Reasons
Aligned to W.3.1 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
What this lesson teaches
State your opinion clearly, then support it with several reasons, using linking words (because, also, for example) and a closing sentence.
Worked examples
Example 1
Opinion: 'Recess should be longer.' Reasons: it helps us focus (because), it's good exercise (also). Closing: 'For these reasons, recess should be longer.'
Example 2
Opinion: 'Every classroom should have a class pet.' Reasons: it teaches responsibility; it gives a reason to read about animals. Closing: restate the opinion.
Example 3
A reason is not the same as a repeat. 'Because it would be great' just says the opinion again; 'because feeding it teaches a routine' is a reason.
Practice questions
- Write an opinion and two reasons.
- Add a linking word between your reasons.
- Write a closing sentence that restates your opinion.

Escritura de opinión con razones
Expresa tu opinión con claridad, luego apóyala con varias razones usando palabras de enlace (porque, además, por ejemplo) y una oración de cierre.
Ejemplo 1: Opinión: 'El recreo debería ser más largo.' Razones: nos ayuda a concentrarnos (porque), es buen ejercicio (además). Cierre: 'Por estas razones, el recreo debería ser más largo.'
Ejemplo 2: Opinión: 'Cada salón debería tener una mascota.' Razones: enseña responsabilidad; da un motivo para leer sobre animales. Cierre: repite la opinión.
Ejemplo 3: Una razón no es lo mismo que una repetición. 'Porque estaría genial' solo repite la opinión; 'porque alimentarla enseña una rutina' sí es una razón.
