Listening for Main Ideas

What this lesson teaches
When you listen to a text or a video, catch what it is mostly about and the details that back it up.
Worked examples
Example 1
After hearing a talk about recycling, you know the main idea is 'recycling helps Earth,' with details like it saves trees and cleans up trash.
Example 2
After a talk about hurricanes, the main idea is 'they form over warm ocean water,' with details about wind speed and the eye.
Example 3
If you cannot name the main idea afterward, you heard the words without following the argument. Asking one question fixes that.
Practice questions
- Listen to a short read-aloud and tell the main idea.
- Name two details you heard that support it.
- Explain how a detail connects to the main idea.

Escuchar la Idea Principal
Cuando escuchas un texto o un video, capta de qué trata más y los detalles que lo apoyan.
Ejemplo 1: Después de escuchar una charla sobre el reciclaje, sabes que la idea principal es 'reciclar ayuda a la Tierra', con detalles como que salva árboles y limpia la basura.
Ejemplo 2: Después de una charla sobre huracanes, la idea principal es 'se forman sobre agua oceánica cálida', con detalles sobre la velocidad del viento y el ojo.
Ejemplo 3: Si después no puedes nombrar la idea principal, oíste las palabras sin seguir el argumento. Hacer una pregunta lo arregla.
