What this lesson teaches

In a discussion, listen closely and build on what others say instead of just waiting to talk. When you report on a topic, speak clearly and use facts and descriptive details.

Worked examples

Example 1

A classmate says volcanoes erupt. You build on it: 'Right, and the hot lava can flow for miles.' That adds a relevant detail to the discussion.

Example 2

A classmate says the Nile flooded every year. You build on it: 'Right, and the flood left behind rich soil, which is why farms grew there.'

Example 3

Building on an idea is different from changing the subject. If your sentence does not connect to theirs, you started a new discussion.

Practice questions

  1. Give a one-minute report on something you learned, with two facts.
  2. Build on a friend's idea in a discussion.
  3. Add a descriptive detail to make a report clearer.

Discusión colaborativa y presentación oral

En una discusión, escucha con atención y complementa lo que dicen los demás en lugar de solo esperar tu turno para hablar. Cuando expongas un tema, habla con claridad y usa datos y detalles descriptivos.

Ejemplo 1: Un compañero dice que los volcanes hacen erupción. Tú complementas: 'Sí, y la lava caliente puede fluir por kilómetros.' Eso agrega un detalle relevante a la discusión.

Ejemplo 2: Un compañero dice que el Nilo se desbordaba cada año. Tú complementas: 'Sí, y la crecida dejaba tierra fértil, por eso ahí crecieron las granjas.'

Ejemplo 3: Construir sobre una idea es distinto de cambiar de tema. Si tu oración no conecta con la suya, empezaste otra discusión.
