What this lesson teaches
Pictures like diagrams and maps add to the words. They show you parts and how things work.
Worked examples
Example 1
A diagram of a plant has arrows pointing to the roots, stem, and leaves, so you can see each part with its name.
Example 2
A timeline across the bottom of a page shows what happened first, second and third, all in one picture.
Example 3
A diagram often shows what a photo cannot — like the inside of a seed, cut in half.
Practice questions
- Look at a diagram and name one part it labels.
- Tell how the diagram helps you understand the words.
- Explain something the picture shows that the words do not say.
