What this lesson teaches
Nonfiction words carry technical precision, connotation, and sometimes figurative force, and authors often refine a key term across a text. Tracking how a word's meaning is built and sharpened reveals the argument's foundation.
Worked example
An essay first uses 'reform' loosely, then defines it as 'gradual legal change,' narrowing the term to control what the reader accepts.
