What this lesson teaches
Complex nonfiction advances more than one central idea, and those ideas build on and complicate each other across the text. Tracing their interaction — and summarizing objectively — captures the whole argument.
Worked example
An article's ideas that technology creates jobs and destroys jobs interact when it shows the same factory automating old roles while hiring coders.
Practice questions
- Identify two central ideas and where each is introduced.
- Explain how the two ideas complicate each other.
- Summarize the text objectively in three sentences.
