What Controls Reaction Rate

What this lesson teaches
Reactions happen when particles collide with enough energy and the right orientation. Raising the temperature makes particles move faster, so collisions are both more frequent and more energetic. Raising the concentration packs more particles into the same space, so collisions happen more often.
Worked example
A glow stick glows faster in hot water than in ice water. In hot water the reacting molecules move faster, collide more often, and more of those collisions carry enough energy to react — so the light-producing reaction speeds up and the stick fades sooner.
Practice questions
- State two things a successful collision between reacting particles needs.
- Explain why crushing a solid into powder before reacting it speeds up the reaction.
- Predict and justify what happens to the rate of a reaction if you both cool it down and dilute one reactant.

Qué controla la velocidad de reacción
Las reacciones ocurren cuando las partículas chocan con suficiente energía y la orientación correcta. Subir la temperatura hace que las partículas se muevan más rápido, así que las colisiones son más frecuentes y más energéticas. Aumentar la concentración mete más partículas en el mismo espacio, así que las colisiones ocurren con más frecuencia.
Ejemplo: Una barra luminosa brilla más rápido en agua caliente que en agua con hielo. En agua caliente las moléculas que reaccionan se mueven más rápido, chocan con más frecuencia y más de esas colisiones tienen suficiente energía para reaccionar, así que la reacción que produce luz se acelera y la barra se apaga antes.
