Bulk Properties and Particle Forces

What this lesson teaches

The forces between particles are invisible, but they show up in properties you can measure at the bulk scale — melting point, boiling point, hardness, and solubility. Stronger attractions between particles take more energy to pull apart, so those substances melt and boil at higher temperatures.

Worked example

Table salt (NaCl) melts at 801 degrees C, while wax melts near 60 degrees C. Salt is held together by strong ionic attractions between charged Na+ and Cl- ions, so it takes far more heat to separate them; wax is held together by weak forces between neutral molecules, which give way easily.

  1. Name two bulk properties that give evidence about the strength of forces between particles.
  2. Substance A melts at 1200 degrees C and substance B melts at 45 degrees C. Which likely has stronger particle-to-particle forces, and why?
  3. Design a simple test comparing the melting points of two solids and state what a higher melting point would let you infer about the particle forces.
