Digital Media in Presentations

Aligned to SL.9-10.5 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

What this lesson teaches

Strategic media — a graph, a short clip, an image — should enhance understanding, not decorate. Choose media that carries meaning words alone would struggle to convey and cut anything that distracts.

Worked example

To show a neighborhood's growth, one before-and-after aerial pair communicates change faster than a paragraph; a spinning logo on the same slide only pulls focus away.

Practice questions

  1. Describe a presentation point and the one media element that would clarify it.
  2. Explain what the media conveys that words alone could not.
  3. Name a flashy element you would cut because it distracts from the point.
