What Does It Mean?

What this lesson teaches

Sometimes a book uses a word we do not know. We can ask what it means and look for clues.

Example 1

A book says a frog is "damp." We can ask, "What does damp mean?" It means a little bit wet.

Example 2

A book says a turtle's shell is 'sturdy.' Ask what that means — it means strong and hard to break.

Example 3

The sentence around a word often explains it: 'The shell is sturdy, so a bird cannot crack it.'
