Visual Arts: making art from imagination & observation

Aligned to NCAS:Cr — National Core Arts Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Your own ideas, memories, and the things you see can all become art. You can look closely at something real, like your pet, or you can picture something in your mind, like a dragon, and then draw it. If it does not look right the first time, you can always change it and try again.

Worked example

Draw your family doing your favorite thing together. Look at how many people there are, then add the details you remember, like the dog or your favorite blanket.

Practice questions

  1. Draw the best day you can imagine.
  2. Look at a real flower or toy, then draw what you see.
  3. Change one thing in your drawing to make it even better.
