Music: making up sounds & musical ideas

Aligned to NCAS:Cr — National Core Arts Standards.

What this lesson teaches

You do not just listen to music, you can make it up too! You can invent a short rhythm, hum a melody you have never heard before, or pick sounds that match a story or a feeling. There are no wrong notes when you are inventing.

Worked example

Make up a silly song about brushing your teeth. Add a soft swishy sound for the bubbles and a high ding when you are done.

Practice questions

  1. Make up a short song about your day.
  2. What sound would a sleepy bear make? Make it with your voice.
  3. Add sound effects while someone reads you a story.
