Recognizing computing devices and their parts
Aligned to CSTA-CS — CSTA K-12 Computer Science Standards.
What this lesson teaches
A computing device is a machine that can take in information and give some back, like a tablet, laptop, phone, or smart speaker. Each one has parts with special jobs: the screen shows pictures, the keyboard or buttons let you type, the speaker makes sound, and the microphone listens. When you know the names of the parts, it is much easier to use them and to ask for help.
Worked example
Look at a tablet. You tap the screen to choose a game, the speaker plays the song, and the little microphone hole hears your voice when you talk to it. Each part has one job, like helpers on a team.
Practice questions
- Point to three parts of a device and say what each one does.
- Which part of a tablet do you use to hear sound?
- Name two devices in your home that can take in and give out information.
