Fixing simple device problems (basic troubleshooting)

Aligned to CSTA-CS — CSTA K-12 Computer Science Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Sometimes a device does not work the way we want, and that is okay. We can stay calm and try simple fixes one at a time, like checking that it is turned on, making sure it is plugged in, or closing an app and opening it again. If your fixes do not work, the smart next step is to ask a trusted grown-up for help.

Worked example

Imagine your tablet screen is dark. First you check: is it turned on? Then: does it need to charge? You plug it in, wait, and try again, just like checking why a flashlight will not light up.

Practice questions

  1. What is the first thing to check if a device will not turn on?
  2. Name one calm fix to try before asking for help.
  3. Who should you ask when your fixes do not work?
