Interpreting & Analyzing Authentic Materials

Aligned to ACTFL Interpretive — ACTFL World-Readiness Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Now you can not only understand authentic texts, films, news, and literature, but analyze them: identifying the main idea, details, tone, and point of view. Engaging with real materials in the original language develops critical thinking and opens perspectives that translation cannot fully capture.

Worked example

Reading a Spanish news article, you might identify that the writer's tone is critical and that they favor one side of an issue, then decide whether you agree.

Practice questions

  1. What does it mean to analyze the tone of a text?
  2. Why might reading something in its original language be better than a translation?
  3. Name a real source you could follow in the language on a topic you like.
