Visual Arts: developing a personal artistic voice
Aligned to NCAS:Cr — National Core Arts Standards.
What this lesson teaches
Your artistic voice is what makes your work feel like yours. You build it by pulling ideas from your own experiences and research, trying different approaches, and revising through several drafts. Asking what am I trying to say keeps your art meaningful, not just decorative.
Worked example
If a friendship ended, you might make a series of three drawings: one bright and full, one cracking apart, one quiet and empty, to express that change instead of just drawing a sad face.
Practice questions
- Keep a sketchbook and add one idea each day this week.
- Pick a piece and revise it twice. What changed and why?
- What are you trying to say with your latest artwork?
