Music: expressive performance & rehearsal
Aligned to NCAS:Pr — National Core Arts Standards.
What this lesson teaches
Playing the right notes is only the start. Expressive performance adds dynamics, phrasing, and style so the music says something. Smart rehearsal means working on the hard spots slowly instead of playing the whole piece over and over, and honestly judging your own progress.
Worked example
Instead of one loud volume, you swell louder as the melody rises and soften as it falls. That shaping turns a row of correct notes into real music.
Practice questions
- Play a phrase with a clear loud-to-soft shape.
- Isolate the hardest measure and practice it slowly five times.
- Record yourself, then name one thing to improve.
