The Main Types of Insurance

What this lesson teaches
Different policies cover different disasters, and each one exists because that loss is too big to self-fund. Health covers medical bills. Auto covers crashes and the damage you cause others. Renters or homeowners covers your home and belongings. Life pays people who depend on your income if you die. Disability replaces your income if you cannot work.
Worked examples
Example 1
Auto insurance has two halves people confuse: liability pays for the damage you cause to others (and is required by law in most states), while collision and comprehensive pay for your own car.
Example 2
Renters insurance is often under $20 a month and covers your belongings plus your liability if a guest is hurt. A landlord's policy covers the building, not your things.
Example 3
Disability insurance is the one most people skip and most people need. For a working adult, losing the ability to earn is a bigger financial risk than dying.
Practice questions
- Match each of the five types to the loss it protects against.
- What does a landlord's insurance NOT cover?
- Why might disability coverage matter more than life insurance to a single 25-year-old?
