Specialized skills in lifelong activities

Aligned to SHAPE 1 — SHAPE America National Standards.

What this lesson teaches

In middle school you sharpen your skills across many kinds of activities, from team sports to individual ones like tennis, dance, or yoga. Building competence in activities you can keep doing as an adult makes it much more likely you will stay active for life. It helps to find a few options you genuinely enjoy, not just the ones everyone plays.

Worked example

If team sports are not your thing, you might get good at rock climbing, cycling, or martial arts instead, activities you could keep doing well into adulthood.

Practice questions

  1. Name a lifelong activity that is not a team sport.
  2. Which activity would you like to get better at?
  3. Why does competence make you more likely to keep going?
