What this lesson teaches

Different materials let you make different kinds of art. Pencil can shade from light to dark, watercolor blends and flows, and clay lets you build in three dimensions. Learning to use tools carefully and finishing your work so it is ready to show takes practice and patience.

Worked example

Shade a circle with a pencil so it looks like a 3D ball: press lightly where the light hits and darker on the far side. Now it pops off the page.

Practice questions

  1. Shade a shape from light to dark with a pencil.
  2. Build something small out of clay or playdough.
  3. After finishing a piece, name one thing you would try differently.

Artes Visuales: materiales y técnicas (dibujo, pintura, escultura)
