Visual Arts: art across cultures & history

Aligned to NCAS:Cn — National Core Arts Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Art is made by people in every time and place, and it often tells us about their lives. A pattern on a basket, a mask, or a painting can carry meaning, history, and identity. Connecting art to where it came from helps you understand the people who made it.

Worked example

Look at ancient Egyptian wall paintings: people are drawn from the side, and the pictures tell stories about their gods and daily life thousands of years ago.

Practice questions

  1. Find a piece of art from another country and describe it.
  2. Why might someone long ago have made this artwork?
  3. Make art inspired by your own family or heritage.
