Make Some Shade

Aligned to K-PS3-2 — Next Generation Science Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Sunlight warms things up, and making shade keeps a spot cooler.

Worked example

The sidewalk feels hot in the sun, but under a big umbrella it feels cooler.

Practice questions

  1. Feel a sunny spot and a shady spot with your hand and tell which is warmer.
  2. Hold up a towel or box to make shade over a toy.
  3. Build a little roof with paper to keep the sun off a spot on the floor.
