What this lesson teaches

Spoken words are made of sounds. We can hear rhymes, break words into sounds, and blend sounds together to make words.

Example 1

The word 'cat' has three sounds: /k/ /a/ /t/. Blend them together quickly and you get 'cat.' 'Cat' rhymes with 'hat.'

Example 2

Clap the parts in 'but-ter-fly' — three claps, three syllables.

Example 3

Change just the first sound in 'man' to /f/ and you get 'fan.' One small sound makes a whole new word.
