What this lesson teaches
Sugars supply carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. Organisms link these atoms into larger molecules such as starches, proteins, and fats, forming new bonds that build body structures.
Worked example
A plant links many glucose molecules into long starch chains for storage; the same carbon atoms can later join into cellulose that stiffens the cell wall.
Practice questions
- List three large biological molecules built from the atoms found in sugar.
- Show how many small glucose units join together to form one starch molecule.
- Construct an argument that atoms from food become part of an organism's own body.

Construir biomoléculas
Los azúcares aportan átomos de carbono, hidrógeno y oxígeno. Los organismos unen estos átomos en moléculas más grandes, como almidones, proteínas y grasas, formando nuevos enlaces que construyen las estructuras del cuerpo.
