What this lesson teaches
Grade 8 nonfiction includes speeches, essays, and articles with dense information. Comprehend them by identifying the structure, noting signal words, and pausing to summarize each section.
Worked examples
Example 1
A history essay packed with dates feels overwhelming until you notice the words 'first,' 'then,' and 'finally' marking a sequence, which turns a wall of text into clear steps.
Example 2
Dense prose usually has a skeleton. Find the transition words and the argument's shape appears without reading every clause.
Example 3
If a paragraph resists three readings, read the one after it. Writers often explain themselves one paragraph late.
