What this lesson teaches
The central idea is the main point an informational text develops across its paragraphs. Trace how supporting details build it, then summarize objectively, reporting the content without your own view.
Worked example
An essay on sleep opens with a claim, adds studies, then a doctor's advice. The central idea, that teens need more sleep, grows detail by detail; a fair summary leaves out 'this is great advice.'
Practice questions
- State the central idea in one sentence.
- Show two details that develop it across the text.
- Write a summary with no opinion or added judgment.
