Comparing Mediums

Aligned to RI.8.7 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

What this lesson teaches

The same topic can be presented in text, audio, or video, and each medium has strengths and weaknesses. Weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each for a particular idea.

Worked example

A podcast on ocean tides lets you hear a scientist's excitement, but a diagram shows the moon's pull at a glance; the audio adds emotion while the image adds clarity.

Practice questions

  1. Name one advantage of a video over an article on a topic.
  2. Name one thing text does better than audio.
  3. Recommend the best medium for a specific idea and explain why.
