What this lesson teaches
Figure out unknown words using context clues, Greek and Latin roots and affixes, and reference tools. Roots and affixes are keys that unlock many words at once.
Worked example
'Benevolent' contains 'bene' (good) and 'vol' (wish) — a benevolent ruler wishes people well. Knowing 'bene' also helps with 'benefit' and 'benefactor.'
Practice questions
- Find an unfamiliar word while reading and guess its meaning from context.
- Break a long word into a root and any prefix or suffix, then define each part.
- Confirm your guess in a dictionary and note whether the clues were reliable.
