The Solar System to Scale

What this lesson teaches

The planets differ enormously in size and in how far apart they sit. Space is mostly empty: the distances between planets are far larger than the planets themselves, which is why textbook pictures that squeeze everything together are misleading. Scientists use scale models to compare these real proportions.

Worked example

If the Sun were a beach ball 30 cm wide, Earth would be a peppercorn the size of a pinhead about 32 meters away, and Jupiter a marble roughly 165 meters off. Even at that shrunken scale you would walk the length of a soccer field just to reach the inner planets.

Practice questions

  1. Look up the diameter of Earth and Jupiter, then figure out how many Earths would fit across Jupiter.
  2. Pick a scale (for example 1 cm = 1 million km) and calculate how far apart to place the Sun and Earth.
  3. Explain why most classroom solar-system posters cannot show both planet sizes and distances correctly at the same time.

Los planetas difieren enormemente en tamaño y en qué tan separados están. El espacio está casi vacío: las distancias entre los planetas son mucho mayores que los planetas mismos, por eso los dibujos de los libros que los amontonan son engañosos. Los científicos usan modelos a escala para comparar estas proporciones reales.

Ejemplo: Si el Sol fuera una pelota de playa de 30 cm de ancho, la Tierra sería un grano de pimienta del tamaño de una cabeza de alfiler a unos 32 metros, y Júpiter una canica a unos 165 metros. Incluso a esa escala reducida caminarías el largo de una cancha de fútbol solo para llegar a los planetas interiores.
