Monitoring and Reducing Human Impact

Aligned to MS-ESS3-3 — Next Generation Science Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Human activities like farming, mining, and burning fuel change the environment, but with good data we can shrink that impact. A strong solution first monitors a problem by measuring it, then applies a science-based method to reduce it, and keeps measuring to check whether it works.

Worked example

A town worried about a polluted creek installs a simple test kit to measure nitrogen from lawn fertilizer each week. After planting a strip of native plants along the bank to soak up runoff, the weekly readings drop — the data proves the buffer is working and guides how wide to make it.

Practice questions

  1. Choose one environmental problem near you and describe how you would measure it over time.
  2. Design a method to reduce water use or waste at home and explain how you would track its success.
  3. Explain why collecting data before and after a change is important when testing a solution.
