What this lesson teaches
Every state has a history — the Indigenous peoples who lived there first, how and when it was settled and became a state, and the key people and events that shaped it. Knowing your state's story helps you understand where you live.
Worked example
Native nations lived on the land for thousands of years before settlers arrived. Towns grew, and the territory eventually joined the United States as a state with its own capital and symbols.
Practice questions
- Name the Indigenous people who first lived in your state.
- What is your state's capital, and when did it become a state?
- Name one important person or event from your state's history.
