Determining Theme

What this lesson teaches
A theme is the lesson or big idea a story teaches about life — not just what happens, but what it means. Find it by noticing what the main character learns or how they change.
Worked example
In a story where a boastful rabbit loses a race to a steady tortoise, events point to the theme: 'Slow, consistent effort beats overconfidence.'
Practice questions
- State the theme of a fable you know and the detail that supports it.
- How is a theme different from a topic like 'friendship'?
- Find two details that support the theme of a book you've read.
