What this lesson teaches
In a true text, maps, photos, and diagrams work with the words. Together they show where, when, why, and how things happen.
Worked examples
Example 1
A diagram of a plant with labeled roots and leaves helps you see how water travels up from the soil.
Example 2
A map with a scale bar lets you see that two cities on the page are really 200 miles apart.
Example 3
A photo shows what something looks like; a diagram shows how it works. Textbooks use both because neither does the other's job.
Practice questions
- Use a picture and the words to tell where something happens.
- Explain how a diagram makes a step easier to understand.
- Find one fact you learned from a photo, not the words.
