Adding and Subtracting within 1000

What this lesson teaches

Add or subtract by working with hundreds, tens, and ones separately. Regroup when a place has more than 9 or not enough to take away.

Example 1

325 + 143: ones 5+3=8; tens 20+40=60; hundreds 300+100=400; put together: 400 + 60 + 8 = 468.

Example 2

472 − 251: ones 2−1=1; tens 70−50=20; hundreds 400−200=200. Put it together: 200 + 20 + 1 = 221.

Example 3

305 + 297: ones 5+7=12, so carry a ten; tens 0+9+1=10, so carry a hundred; hundreds 3+2+1=6. Answer: 602.
