What this lesson teaches
Authors bend chronology on purpose — opening at the end, withholding a scene, or stretching a single moment — to create tension, surprise, or dramatic irony. Analyze why the events are ordered as they are, not merely what happens.
Worked example
A story opens with a man calmly mailing a package, then spends its middle showing how he built the bomb inside it; because we already saw the calm mailing, every step of assembly reads as dread rather than suspense, and the ordinary opening becomes the most frightening image in the piece.
Practice questions
- Identify where a text departs from straight chronological order and describe the actual sequence.
- Explain the effect — tension, surprise, irony — that the arrangement produces.
- Argue what would be lost if the same events were told in simple time order.

Ejemplo: Un cuento abre con un hombre enviando tranquilamente un paquete y luego dedica su parte central a mostrar cómo armó la bomba que va dentro; como ya vimos el envío tranquilo, cada paso del armado se lee como pavor y no como suspenso, y la apertura común se vuelve la imagen más aterradora del texto.
