How Language Functions in Context

What this lesson teaches
Understanding that language functions differently across contexts lets a writer make deliberate choices for meaning and style — varying sentence length for rhythm, choosing active or passive voice for emphasis, following or bending a convention on purpose. Analyze the effect, then choose.
Worked example
'Mistakes were made' uses the passive voice to hide who acted, which is exactly why an official might prefer it to 'I made mistakes'; recognizing that the grammar itself dodges responsibility lets a writer choose the passive to soften, or the active to own the act.
Practice questions
- Rewrite one sentence in both active and passive voice and describe how the emphasis shifts.
- Vary a run of short sentences into one longer sentence and explain the change in rhythm and effect.
- Identify a stylistic choice in your own writing and justify it by the meaning it serves, not habit.

Cómo Funciona el Lenguaje según el Contexto
Entender que el lenguaje funciona distinto según el contexto permite a un escritor tomar decisiones deliberadas de significado y estilo — variar la longitud de las oraciones por ritmo, elegir voz activa o pasiva por énfasis, seguir o doblar una convención a propósito. Analiza el efecto y luego elige.
Ejemplo: 'Se cometieron errores' usa la voz pasiva para ocultar quién actuó, que es justo por lo que un funcionario podría preferirla a 'Cometí errores'; reconocer que la gramática misma esquiva la responsabilidad permite al escritor elegir la pasiva para suavizar o la activa para asumir el acto.
