Waves and Electromagnetic Radiation

What this lesson teaches
Waves carry energy and are described by wavelength, frequency, and amplitude. The electromagnetic spectrum ranges from radio waves to gamma rays.
Worked examples
Example 1
Visible light is one part of the spectrum; radio waves have longer wavelengths and lower frequency, while X-rays have shorter wavelengths and higher energy.
Example 2
All of it travels at the same speed in a vacuum. A radio wave and a gamma ray leaving a star arrive together.
Example 3
Frequency and wavelength are locked: c = fλ. Doubling the frequency halves the wavelength, always.

Ondas y Radiación Electromagnética
Las ondas transportan energía y se describen por su longitud de onda, frecuencia y amplitud. El espectro electromagnético va desde las ondas de radio hasta los rayos gamma.
Ejemplo 1: La luz visible es una parte del espectro; las ondas de radio tienen longitudes de onda más largas y menor frecuencia, mientras que los rayos X tienen longitudes de onda más cortas y mayor energía.
Ejemplo 2: Todo viaja a la misma velocidad en el vacío. Una onda de radio y un rayo gamma que salen de una estrella llegan juntos.
Ejemplo 3: La frecuencia y la longitud de onda están ligadas: c = fλ. Duplicar la frecuencia reduce a la mitad la longitud de onda, siempre.
