Radical and Rational Equations

What this lesson teaches

Solve a radical equation by isolating the root and squaring both sides. Squaring can introduce extraneous solutions that do not satisfy the original equation, so you must check every answer.

Worked example

Solve √(x + 5) = x − 1. Square both sides: x + 5 = x^2 − 2x + 1, so x^2 − 3x − 4 = 0, giving (x − 4)(x + 1) = 0 and x = 4 or x = −1. Check: x = 4 gives √9 = 3 ✓; x = −1 gives √4 = 2 but x − 1 = −2 ✗, so x = 4 only.

  1. Solve √(2x + 1) = 3.
  2. Solve √(x + 6) = x and check for extraneous solutions.
  3. Solve 1/(x − 2) = 3 for x.
