Structure, Time, and Suspense
Aligned to RL.9-10.5 — Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
What this lesson teaches
Authors arrange events out of order — using flashback, foreshadowing, or a delayed reveal — to create tension, mystery, or surprise. Analyze why the chosen order affects the reader differently than plain chronology would.
Worked example
A story that opens with a shattered trophy on the floor, then jumps back a week, makes every ordinary scene tense because the reader keeps waiting to learn who broke it and why.
Practice questions
- Identify where a text departs from strict chronological order.
- Name the effect that arrangement creates — mystery, tension, or surprise.
- Explain how telling the same events in order would weaken that effect.

Estructura, Tiempo y Suspenso
