How Complex Characters Develop

What this lesson teaches
Complex characters hold conflicting motives and change across a story. Track how their choices affect other characters and push the plot or theme forward, rather than judging them as simply good or bad.
Worked example
A loyal deputy who covers for his corrupt sheriff out of gratitude forces the town to keep trusting a liar; his divided loyalty both stalls the investigation and reveals the story's theme that debt can silence conscience.
Practice questions
- Name a character's two competing motives and the moment they collide.
- Trace one decision that changes another character's situation.
- Explain how the character's development advances a theme, not just the plot.
