What this lesson teaches
A work from outside the United States reflects a specific cultural experience and point of view. Analyze how that perspective shapes what the narrator notices, values, and assumes the reader already knows.
Worked example
In a story set in a coastal fishing village where the sea is called 'the grandmother,' the narrator treats storms as a family member's moods — a viewpoint that assumes nature is kin, not scenery.
Practice questions
- Identify a value or assumption the narrator treats as normal.
- Explain how that cultural point of view shapes one description or judgment.
- Contrast it with an assumption a reader from your own culture might bring instead.
