Measuring with Cubes
Aligned to 1.MD.A.2 — Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
What this lesson teaches
We can measure how long something is by laying same-size units end to end, with no gaps and no overlaps. Then we count the units.
Worked example
A pencil is as long as 6 cubes laid in a row. So the pencil is 6 cubes long.
Practice questions
- A crayon is 4 cubes long and a marker is 7 cubes long. Which is longer?
- If a book is 9 paper clips long, how many paper clips is that?
- Why should the cubes have no gaps between them?
