Dance: choreography & composing movement

Aligned to NCAS:Cr — National Core Arts Standards.

What this lesson teaches

Choreography is the art of putting movements together to make a dance. You can use patterns, repeat a move so people remember it, and add contrast by switching from fast to slow. A good dance has a clear beginning and ending and is about an idea or feeling.

Worked example

Choreograph a short routine to a favorite song: start frozen in a shape, repeat a spin-and-clap pattern twice, then end in a big pose on the last beat.

Practice questions

  1. Make a dance with a clear beginning and end.
  2. Repeat one move twice so the audience remembers it.
  3. What idea or feeling is your dance about?
