What People in the Trades Actually Do

What this lesson teaches
A trade is a skilled job you learn mostly by doing it, usually alongside someone experienced. Electricians, plumbers, welders, carpenters, HVAC techs and auto technicians all solve physical problems that cannot be solved from a desk. These are careers, not fallbacks.
Worked examples
Example 1
When a house is built, a carpenter frames the walls, an electrician runs the wiring, a plumber runs the pipes, and an HVAC tech installs the heating. Nobody does all four.
Example 2
A welder joins metal so strongly that the joint holds a bridge. That takes years of practice, and it is why welders are paid for skill, not for time.
Example 3
Every trade has an emergency side. A plumber called at 2 a.m. for a burst pipe is doing work that genuinely cannot wait.
Practice questions
- Name four trades and one thing each one builds or fixes.
- Pick a trade and describe a problem only that person could solve.
- Why can't these jobs be done from a computer?
